STI specializes in the
analysis, design, and manufacture of advanced fluid mechanical systems for
a wide variety of applications.
Fluid analysis and design is critical for our gas discharge and
chemical laser technology.
A repetitively pulsed
gas discharge laser creates hot gas with each discharge that must be cooled
and reconditioned before the next shot.
As the repetition rate increases, this task becomes more
difficult. STI has led the way in
the design of the flow loops necessary to circulate the gases in these
lasers. Using state-of-the-art
codes and our extensive experience, we design and fabricate all the flow
loops for our custom-made discharge lasers (see Custom
Lasers)
We have a patented
technique for generating very uniform droplets. The uniform surface areas of these droplets relative to their
volume permits optimizing chemical reactions that occur at the
surfaces. For example, these
uniform droplets can improve the performance of chemical oxygen iodine lasers
(COIL) by efficiently generating the excited-state oxygen atoms needed in
these devices. (See STI's support of the ABL program.) Other potential uses for uniform
droplets include advanced sprayers and heat exchangers.
Our fluid engineering
capabilities are also available as a separate service to customers (see Engineering Services). This includes related technologies such
as analysis and design of heat exchangers.
Below summarizes are capabilities.
- Mass
and heat transfers with chemical reaction kinetics
- Unsteady
compressible flow
- Two-phase
flows
- Shock
wave propagation
- Computational
analysis (FLUENT)
